Chandler Chamber Community Foundation Scholarships

Chandler Chamber Community Foundation and Air Products and Chemicals will award up to three (3) scholarships in the value of $2,000 each to students who enroll in at least a part-time in a business related course of study at Chandler Gilbert Community College.

Scholarship Eligibility: 

• Must live or work in Chandler, Arizona. Or be a current student at any high school
  servicing Chandler or attend Chandler Gilbert Community College. 
• Must be a legal resident of the United States 
• Applicants must be actively enrolled at Chandler-Gilbert Community College for the
  2018-2019 academic year with a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester 
• Grade Point Average must be 3.0 or higher (for high school students applying) 
• Field of Study must be business related 
• Must submit one letter of recommendation 
• Must attach high school or college transcript to application 
• If chosen to receive the scholarship, must attend an award ceremony (time, date and
  location to be determined) in order to receive the scholarship.  

Process
All application will be considered by a panel of judges comprised of members from the Chandler
Chamber Community Foundation representing Chandler based businesses and a representative
from Chandler Gilbert Community College. Applications will be evaluated on academic
achievement, letter of recommendation and written essay.

Completed applications and corresponding materials should be mailed or hand delivered to the
address below by April 20, 2018. Late applications will not be considered. All decisions made
will be final. Recipients will be notified no later than the week of May 8th, 2018.

Scholarship recipients will be required to attend a mandatory award ceremony time, date and
location to be determined in order to receive their scholarship. At this award ceremony recipients
will be asked to say a few words.

CGCC Students Selected as 2018 Coca-Cola Gold Scholars

Hats off to Heather Robinson, Kimberly Redding, and Lauren Allison for recently being selected as a Gold Scholar on Coca-Cola’s 2018 Academic Team. All three recipients will receive a $1,500 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation to assist in their pursuit of a higher education.

“Congratulations to Heather, Kimberly and Lauren for being named to Coca-Cola’s 2018 Academic Team,” said William Guerriero, interim president at CGCC. “We are extremely proud of your academic accomplishments and are excited to see what the future holds for each of you.”

Heather, a nursing student at the Williams Campus, is working on a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Northern Arizona University and hopes to become a Labor and Delivery nurse at Mercy Gilbert Hospital.

Kimberly, a Fine Arts student at the Pecos Campus, is working towards a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a minor in behavioral psychology at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.

Lauren is currently majoring in aviation at the Williams Campus and is working towards her bachelor’s degree in Applied Science Aviation at Arizona State University. Following graduation, she plans to attend the American Flyer’s mechanic/pilot cross training internship program and obtain private, instrument, and commercial flight ratings.

Heather, Kimberly, and Lauren’s selection were based on the score they earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition, for which more than 2,000 applications were received this year. This program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Phi Theta Kappa will recognize Heather, Kimberly and Lauren along with other 2018 Coca-Cola Academic Team Scholars on stage at PTK Catalyst, Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Convention, April 19-21 in Kansas City, Missouri. On behalf of CGCC, congratulations on your outstanding academic achievement and leadership accomplishments that earned you this recognition.

All-USA/All-AZ Academic Team Scholarships Applications Now Open

CGCC will nominate two students from Pecos Campus and two students from Williams Campus to the 2018 All-Arizona Community College Academic Team. These four students will receive scholarships that pays four semesters of tuition at ASU, NAU, or UofA.

In addition, the four nominees will be considered at the national level for placement into the prestigious All-USA Academic Team Scholarship.

Students can apply through the Phi Theta Kappa website (although PTK membership is not required).
The college's application deadline is Friday, November 10, 2017.

Four students named to state academic team, receive scholarships

Four Chandler-Gilbert Community College students were honored at the 20th Annual All-Arizona Academic Awards Luncheon on Feb. 18. Lori Fusak and Whitney Vizzini from the Pecos Campus and Cassandra Roose and Cecile Sharp from the Williams Campus were named to the All-Arizona Academic Team by the Phi Theta Kappa organization. They were among 26 students awarded from the Maricopa Community College District and 73 from across the state.

To be eligible for the award, students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, be in good academic standing, be working on an associate’s degree, demonstrate leadership, and interact with their community as a college ambassador.

Judging to select the recipients consisted of three rounds. In the first round, a group of local business, civic, education and government leaders reviewed applications and chose the recipients of the award. Only two are selected from each campus of the college. Those recipients’ applications were then forwarded to Washington, D.C. for second and third rounds of judging by representatives from various federal agencies and national education associations who scored them. Those scores were used to rank the students for first, second or third state team. First team members receive a $1,000 scholarship, second team members a $750 scholarship, and third team members a $500 scholarship to one of Arizona’s state universities.

Fusak, Sharp and Vizzini were awarded First Team honors and Roose received Second Team honors.

In the long-term, Fusak plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications and become a publicist while continuing her work with the homeless. Roose will complete medical school to become a neurosurgeon and devote a few years to Doctors Without Borders. Sharp plans to become a social worker serving the elderly population of Maricopa County. Vizzini will earn her juris doctorate and own a law firm in Arizona as well as continue to build homes with Habitat for Humanity.

Inaugural donor reception pairs students with benefactors

Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) held its inaugural scholarship donor reception on Dec. 4. More than 40 students were recognized as recipients of scholarships established by individuals, organizations and corporations, whose representatives were also present. This fall, CGCC awarded $883,000 in scholarships to more than 2,842 students.

CGCC President Linda Lujan spoke at the event, noting “Donors understand that investments made in education are compounded dramatically in their return and their impact on the lives of students and their current and future families as well as on society.”

According to the College Board’s 2013 Education Pays, students who earn degrees are not only more likely to have a higher salary but they are also more likely to be employed, to receive health benefits and pension programs from their employers, to be more active citizens, to lead healthier lifestyles, to move up the socioeconomic ladder, and to spend more time with their children.

Lujan went on to note that scholarships are only one way the college works to help it’s nearly 20,000 students reach their individual education goals, mentioning dedicated staff and faculty; innovative programs designed by faculty either at the college or in conjunction with other colleges; support of the community through service-learning projects, internships and partnerships; as well as district-wide initiatives from the Maricopa County Community College District.

“CGCC’s vision is to help every student succeed,” said Lujan. “Awarding nearly one million dollars to deserving students wouldn’t be possible without our donors. It’s important that we take the time to recognize and honor them and give them the opportunity to meet the students who are benefitting from their generosity.”

Student's efforts to save daughter leads to recognition and scholarship

Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) student Aimee Johnson has been a volunteer with United Blood Services and Be the Match for the past five years, raising awareness of the need for under-represented populations to become blood and bone marrow donors. Her interest stems from her 6-year-old daughter’s need to find a bone marrow match that will save her life.

Johnson, who applied and was selected for CGCC’s Student Public Policy Forum (SPPF) at the beginning of her sophomore year, selected the issue as her capstone project, a requirement of the SPPF program. Her project included coordinating a combined blood donation and bone marrow registration day at the Pecos Campus.

Her story and this effort is captured in the article “Turning a Day of Hope into a Legacy of Saving Lives” in the June issue of Chandler Lifestyle magazine (page 22).

Just prior to graduation, Johnson was selected for the Civic Leadership Medallion award by Maricopa Community College District Chancellor Rufus Glasper in recognition of her level of civic participation and leadership. She was also awarded the Maria Hesse Leadership Scholarship which will help cover expenses for the remaining semester Johnson will be at CGCC before transferring to Arizona State University, 


“As a mom and a student, I’m just one person doing what I need to do,” said Johnson. “There is no one thing I was doing that I thought was extra ordinary. However, receiving the two awards made me stop and consider that there are a lot of ‘one persons’ out there and when we put our efforts together, we can overcome anything.”

Three receive honors scholarships

Three Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) honors students were awarded scholarships during the Honors Program ​Scholarship Reception and Academic Showcase on April 28. The students were selected from a group of honors program applicants based on a holistic review of their academics as well as contributions to the college and the community.

"Often scholarships are given to students as a recruiting tool," said Shirley Miller, faculty and co-director of the honors program at CGCC. "In this case, these students have proven themselves to excel beyond the requirements of the general classroom and to maintain a consistently high standard of performance. To be recognized as outstanding among fellow honors students is a significant honor."

Justin Fordham was awarded the Chancellor's Scholarship​,​ which is offered to one student at each Maricopa County Community College annually to acknowledge and reward students who demonstrate the very highest academic achievement and participate in service. ​It covers up to 18 credit hours of in-county tuition and fees for two semesters. In addition, the scholarship includes a cash award of $250 for books and supplies each semester.​ Fordham will continue his studies at CGCC next semester but plans to earn his associate degree and transfer to University of Arizona to study nursing.

Heather King and Jacquelyn Rose Lupo received a Foundation Scholarship, which rewards and encourages highly motivated, academically gifted students with a $500 award. In addition to excellence in academics, King has participated in the Chandler-Gilbert Dance Company, has served at the Save the Family Thrift Store, and works part-time. She plans to become a pediatric nurse. Lupo, a business management major, will complete her bachelor’s degree with Northern Arizona University by enrolling in the Connect2NAU program in business at CGCC. Lupo earned the award based on her honors program achievements in the classroom and many volunteer hours in the community. She also works part-time.

Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) honored their 10th Annual Teal & Silver award recipients during a breakfast event at the college's Williams Campus on May 6. Twelve winners were recognized for their dedication and support of CGCC students, employees, programs, services and the college community.

The 2014 Teal & Silver award recipients are:

• Lisa Avalos, Desert Ridge High School who, through her commitment, increased dual enrollment participation by 48 percent in one year.
• Linda Czarnecki, Doherty Foundation, who has donated more than $132,000 to over CGCC 250 students on behalf of the foundation.
• Steven Fox, Ph.D. Licensed Psychologist for his contributions to the academic success and persistence of CGCC students through his volunteer service to the Psychology Club. 
• Officer Derek Fritsche, Mesa Police Department, who not only serves as a reserve police officer but has volunteered for CGCC’s law enforcement training academy and had had numerous accomplishments.
• Jace Hermanson, Arizona Sun Sales, who has consistently shown his passion for the electric utility technology program following his graduation from the program through his participation as an adjunct faculty member, volunteer, lineman’s competition judge and scholarship donor.
• Terri Kimble, Chandler Chamber of Commerce, who recognizes the important role education plays in the region’s economic prosperity and is supportive of the unique contributions of community colleges to the community’s future.
• Jeanine Masumura, Higley Unified School District who has coordinated more than 200 service-learning opportunities, providing approximately 5,000 hours of extra help in the Higley district’s classrooms. 
• Chief Frank Milstead, Mesa Police Department, who, through his assistance and leadership, has helped the CGCC law enforcement training academy build an outstanding reputation.
• Robert Richter, Roberts Catering, who has played a significant role in many events hosted by the Office of Student Affairs over the past 15 years.
• Kristi Robertson, AdMix Social, who has helped grow CGCC’s Facebook fans by more than 5,000 and increased Twitter followers by more than 2,100 as well as increased reach and engagement in those channels.
• Amanda Shepherd, Gilbert Senior Center, who enabled 195 CGCC students to experience deep and meaningful service-learning opportunities interacting with seniors.
• Staff of the Marketing and Communications Department, Maricopa County Community College District for saving CGCC considerable resources through their professional support of the college’s marketing and communications efforts.

"This year's Teal & Silver award recipients have made a significant difference in our college community through their contributions and commitment to the CGCC students, faculty and staff," said Linda Lujan, Chandler-Gilbert Community College president. "None of us do this alone. It truly takes all our partnerships and friendships for CGCC to serve our students and communities, and we are truly grateful for their efforts."

The Chandler-Gilbert Community College Teal & Silver Awards Program was created to recognize the contributions of individuals who support Chandler-Gilbert Community College through various efforts. This year's recipients positively impact the college by assisting with the program or service improvements, supporting creative and innovative ideas, improving the quality of the college experience, support the delivery of instruction, providing resources or assisting with cost-saving measures and advocating for the college in media, with elected officials and the in the community.

Three Chandler-Gilbert Community College students were honored along with 22 other Maricopa Community College District students at the 18th Annual All-Arizona Academic Team Recognition Ceremony on February 20.

The ceremony celebrates the outstanding academic achievements and distinguished leadership of students enrolled in Arizona community colleges. Five organizations — Phi Theta Kappa, American Association of Community Colleges, Arizona Board of Regents and USA Today — then help these students reach their educational goals by awarding scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $500 and issuing tuition waivers to any of Arizona’s three universities.

CGCC students Wilson Craghead, Avonlea Hope, and Samantha Janko all received $750 scholarships and plan to transfer to Arizona State University to study biochemistry, bioresearch technology and biomedical engineering respectively.

Students selected to the Academic Team in their state are also eligible to be chosen as a national scholar, which includes a spring feature in USA Today and eligibility for additional scholarships. Learn more information about the awards.
