2019 Commencement Ceremony

The 28th annual Chandler-Gilbert Community College Commencement Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 10 at 6 p.m. at Sloan Park in Mesa. CGCC President Dr. Greg Peterson will deliver the welcoming remarks, and Jacob Montgomery, a creative writing student who will continue his education at Arizona State University, is the student speaker. More than 300 students who have earned a degree or certificate are expected to be in attendance.

2019 CGCC Summer Camps and Workshops

CGCC offers several summer camps and workshops.

Summer Percussion Workshop

• June 3 - 6, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily
• Pecos Campus

• The CGCC Summer Percussion Workshop is designed to promote percussion participation and instruct students in the areas of percussion ensemble and solo percussion performance. This workshop is open to high school percussion students, including those entering high school or 2019 graduates. Students will spend time in ensemble rehearsal as well as in topical and solo performance based masterclasses.
• The final evening (Thursday) of the workshop will feature a Solo & Ensemble Percussion Recital. The ensemble selections that have been rehearsed throughout the week will be featured, along with selected outstanding solo selections prepared in advance by the workshop participants (optional). The recital will be held in the Agave Building at Chandler-Gilbert Community College Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. on June 6, 2019.

Opera Workshop

• Students will be required to sing an opera, operetta, aria or classical art song for the first class meeting. This is a hybrid course and extra time is required outside of scheduled class meeting time.

CGCC Team Wins Innovation of the Year

CGCC’s nominee for Innovation of the Year, “Food and Green Waste Recycling Program: An Ongoing Collaborative Project Model for Sustaining Student Learning, Success, and Creativity through Experiential Learning,” continues CGCC’s longstanding commitment to sustainability, and it brings together a coalition of faculty, administrators, and support staff with the goal of elevating experiential learning. One of the best features of this project is its multidisciplinary approach. Students in diverse fields of study are engaged in critical thinking, problem-solving and hands-on experimentation.

Adjunct and full-time faculty are connecting with leaders in college facility operations, food service, marketing and media to optimize the student learning experience and to model the value of cooperative planning and project management spanning a complex, hierarchical educational organization. CGCC won the 2019 Maricopa Community College Innovation of the Year Award for the Waste Food Digester project. One project is selected each from all of the colleges in the district, and the winner receives the Dr. Paul M. Pair Innovation of the Year Award of $2,000 for future innovation.

Baseball Fans: Join the Pre-Game Hall of Fame Ceremony for Tyler Hollick

Chandler-Gilbert Community College will be Inducting NJCAA National Baseball Player of the Year Tyler Hollick into College’s Hall of Fame. Join us on March 30, 2019 as we honor former baseball player Tyler Hollick during a pre-game Hall of Fame ceremony.  Former draft pick of the San Francisco Giants and Okotoks Dawgs Academy General Manager Tyler Hollick to be Honored during Hall of Fame  Ceremony DATE: SATURDAY, 3.30.19  TIME: 11:45 AM  LOCATION:  Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Pecos Campus Baseball Field 2626 East Pecos RoadChandler, Arizona 85225-2499 The pre-game ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the CGCC baseball field prior to the Coyotes’ doubleheader against Eastern Arizona College. In honor of his highly decorated baseball career, Hollick’s commemorative alumni banner will be permanently displayed on the right-field wall. HALL OF FAMER: TYLER HOLLICK In 2012, Hollick was named the NJCAA DII National Player of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and unanimously voted the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Player of the Year. He was also selected to the first-team All-Region I and first-team All-ACCAC. That season Hollick had a .468 batting average with 61 stolen bases and 53 walks. Hollick is the CGCC career leader in batting average and stolen bases. The San Francisco Giants selected Hollick in the 14th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Hollick signed with the Giants and played for three teams in their organization. In 2013 as a member of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, he led the Northwest League with 43 runs. Hollick retired from professional baseball after the 2014 season. “Tyler is the most dedicated player I have had the pleasure to coach,” said Russell Luce, CGCC Head Baseball Coach. “He had the ability to work without tiring, and more importantly, the ability to produce in all situations. I think the best thing about him was his joy in playing. He was a great teammate.” Hollick is a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He currently serves as the General Manager and 18U Head Coach of the Okotoks Dawgs Academy, a high-performance youth baseball program, based in Okotoks, Alberta. He and his family will be in attendance at Saturday’s ceremony.  CGCC'S BASEBALL PROGRAM CGCC’s Baseball program boasts an impressive roster of major and minor league players. Established in 2001 by Jeff Mason and Doyle Wilson. the athletics team is proud to offer an opportunity for players to develop their athletic and academic skills as a foundation for next steps into University, Minor, and Major League Baseball Career Opportunities. The strength of the program is the commitment from the coaching staff, led by Head Coach Russell Luce, to develop and build up future leaders and academically strong players. Four CGCC Students Named to All-Arizona Academic Team

Four high-achieving Chandler-Community College students were celebrated at the 2019 All-Arizona Academic Team Recognition Ceremony on February 27.

The ceremony celebrated The ceremony celebrates the outstanding academic achievements, community service and distinguished leadership of students enrolled in Arizona’s community colleges. All-Arizona students demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society.

The All-Arizona Academic Team program was introduced as a way to provide academic recognition to Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) members while promoting excellence at two-year colleges. This year’s honorees represent all 10 of the Maricopa Community Colleges and include students pursuing a variety of degrees and careers, including biomedical engineering, nuclear medicine, public health, electrical engineering, education, psychology, biology and public service and public policy. Most intend to transfer to four-year universities, and several intend to pursue graduate degrees.

All-Arizona Team members are selected for their demonstration of academic excellence and intellectual rigor, leadership and service, and for their commitment to extending their education beyond the classroom to benefit society. Each student is working toward an associate degree and maintains a GPA of 3.5 or higher (4.0 scale).

This year’s Chandler-Gilbert Community College honorees, listed by college campus, are Arvin Arasteh, Janet Armour, Bao Quoc Le, and Brooke Sherman.

Arvin Arasteh

Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Pecos Campus 
Major: Computer Science
Arasteh plans to transfer to the Arizona State University Fulton Schools of Engineering for a Bachelor of Computer Science degree. His career goal is to work as software developer in the medical field.
College/Community Activities: Vice president of Student Government, Phi Theta Kappa’s Honors in Action Project, Into the Streets Program, Peer Mentor Program

Sherman plans to transfer to the Arizona State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology. Her career goal is to fight for public policy and legislative reform surrounding drugs and drug offenders, while providing compassionate counseling and treatment options for trauma victims and substance-dependent patients.

College/Community Activities: Crisis counselor with Crisis Text Line, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Honors in Action officer and president and Student Public Policy Program participant

Armour plans to attend Northern Arizona University for her Bachelor in Nursing degree. Her goal is to become a Certified Diabetes Educator and create community programs that teach lifestyle management of Type 2 Diabetes with the goal of reducing the complications often suffered by those in low-income communities due to lack of resources.
College/Community Activities: Phi Theta Kappa community service officer, volunteer with Feed My Starving Children
